SOME GREYHOUNDS ATTACK/FIGHT DURING A RACE OR TRIAL

Image school for referees – those who see and who “do not see”. We protect health of our racing greyhounds.

All greyhounds are beautiful, gentle and friendly.  But they are also fast and competitive. They have been bred for hunting, thus chasing what is moving, for thousands of years. The moving “hare” encourages greyhounds into run and they all want to the bait. Greyhounds bravely compete for a victory on the track and only one is the first to hit the finish line.
However, some have too aggressive spirit and some of them don't follow the hare during a race and sometimes it happens that such greyhounds start attacking their sparing-partners.
They do not want it to be the first one to hunt down the desirable “hare”.
The hunting instinct of such greyhound turns into aggression against the sparing-partner.
While running they attack, beat, attempting to bite and jump on their sparing partners. For this behaviour in Czech language many dog owners use a very kind but at the same time very wrong expression that could be translated as "knocking". All it is is pure aggression.

The running speed during races is very high, the physical regularities are similar to situation when a fast car driver suddenly turns the steering wheel away from the driving direction. If a greyhound attacks his racing partner in the bend, there is a risk that the attacking greyhound starts turning and it can result in injury. The attacking greyhound limits, beats and endangers its partners.
The attacking greyhound holds down and beats and attacks the greyhound running alongside.
But it's not just about injuries of an attacker, certainly other greyhounds can easily get hurt as well.
Like on the road – when one driver crashes, a mass car accident can happen.
Even if an attack, during a race, does not result in hurting anyone, who would like to have his/her greyhound frustrated just because another greyhound attacked him/her again and again?

Some greyhounds fight back when they are attacked and some greyhounds continue in running and chasing the hare.
Race organizators should organize greyhound races, not greyhound fights.

An attacking greyhound must be disqualified from the racing. Not only for safety reasons – to avoid the greyhounds being injured – but because the attacking greyhound ruins the entire run, entire race.
An attacked greyhound is held down in its run and slowed down, while the greyhounds in the last positions are able to get to the leading positions. Certainly, unintentional collision is not considered as attacking.
Attacking is always intentional assault against a peaceful partner that is simply faster than the aggressor. Even turning head towards a sparing-partners is considered as reason for disqualification - such greyhound does not pay attention to the hare.
In such case, hunting instinct is deteriorated and aggression may prevail.

Greyhound Elita Co Co - 2nd Disqualification

Greyhound bitch Elita Co Co received her 2nd disqualification for attacking at greyhound race track in Beerta (Belgium) on
the 28th of July 2007.

Elita Co Co received at least 5 disqualifications during her racing career.

Supposedly her record has not been beaten yet.

The owner of the bitch let her race at various races of various racing organizations (from the FCI to CGRF and to CGRC) as one organization does not take into account the fact that she was disqualified at races of another organization .

An attacking greyhound is “disqualified” – Disq. is recorded in its Racing Log.
Hardly any owner is willing to provide his calm greyhound as a sparing-partner for the “correction runs” after disqualification (max. 3 times).

After a third correcting trial, In case of another, third disqualification, the greyhound is disqualified from racing forever.

If a greyhound receives disqualification for the third time, it is not just accidental behavior, it cannot be changed. Such behavior is more than often transferred to the next litter.

Some irresponsible greyhound owners, however, send up a greyhound - fighter, that is disqualified by one organization

(that issues their own racing licences), to races that are organized
by another racing organization (that issues different licences) hoping that the greyhound won't be disqualified again.
(Note: a czech greyhound owner can race with a licence issued by the CGRF or with a licence issued with the FCI or with a licence issued by the CGRC - each organization holds its "own" races at variuos race tracks).

The catch in such “dog fighting” is not the artificial hare, but a living greyhound – the racing sparring partner.
The attacked dog is being attacked in front of the referees who do not see, guess why...
Due to a small number of racing greyhounds in the Czech Republic, the greyhound attacks are often knowingly disregarded.

Probably to have as many greyhounds at a race track as possible.

These are the main reasons why our organization has not been accepting greyhounds with various, different, unknown licences since our Czech Derby 2007. Bad experiences with one foreign greyhound (i.e. not owned by any of our members)  taught us a lot.
We cannot be sure if such greyhound has not attacked other racers (at races held by a different organization) and there is not record in his/her Racing book..
We prefer to believe only what we can check (we accept licences issued by the countries organized in the World Greyhound Racing Federation - IGB, GBGB, SHCF, etc.).

We have always checked FCI greyhounds before races (i.e. whether a greyhound runs near the outer fencing, in the middle or near the inner fencing of the track).
At least two trials are obligatory before a greyhound can participate in our CGRF races.
(It is well known that we require to pass at least 2 trials at our race track before we can allow such greyhound race with other dogs).
FCI greyhounds can have the FCI racing licence, however these greyhounds are not classified.

You can be sure that we do our best to have clean races, to protect greyhound welfare.
Even if we, the CGRF, would have "two and a half" greyhounds we will organize the races without fighters.
Iffy egos of some greyhound owners and race organizators have no place in our organization. The number of racing sighounds, and especially greyhounds, is very limited in the Czech Republic as greyhound races are just a hobby here.

Lots of greyhounds or lots of races "at all costs" - that is not our priority.

Not for the information above: human sight cannot determine whether the bitch attacked before or after the finish line. Only professional timing system (the timing machine can measure with the accuracy to one-thousandth of a second) could determine that the above-mentioned greyhound attacked the other greyhound approximately one-thousandth of a second after the finish line.
Greyhound Kengeylfuto Karcsu was attacking in 300 m sprint after passing the finish line- she was not disqualified from the race
Whether in Walthamstow, Cork, Shelbourne Park, Ireland, England, America or anywhere else on the professional tracks of the World Greyhound Racing Federation (WGRF), it is absolutely impossible that a greyhound, trained by an unlicenced amateur trainer (i.e. his owner trains the greyhound by himself, as his hobby, but without proper knowledge) could go racing without a proper licence.

Nobody can register a greyhound for a race just because he/she wants to race in that one particular race without passing prescribed procedures.
The greyhound owners have their greyhounds (including a licensed trainer) bound to a certain track under a contract for the entire racing season.
Unlike in our country, it is impossible that a greyhound owner (e.g. with a licence issued by the FCI) just wakes up in the morning and decides to race with his greyhound in Cork and next weekend perhaps in Shelbourne Park, while he would like some place in Australia the following weekend, arriving there with his greyhound to “have a run” on their beautiful track (this happens in our country pretty often, and even across various organizations, often with incompatible racing licenses).

The WGRF’ care is so thorough (Mark Sulliwan also states this in his book The Ultimate Greyhound) that there is a rule established, saying that if a greyhound even belonging to a certain track happens not to race for certain period of time, must be first qualified (prepared)
by a trainer for the racing before he returns to the track.
They do not let such greyhounds immediately join the properly trained racing greyhounds into the races.

Although we are an amateur organization, we also do not want our greyhounds to be endangered by other greyhounds, that we do not have our own experience with.
The racing of greyhounds of the “wide racing public” along with greyhounds of our organization (CGRF) members cannot be held at our track anymore.
Our greyhounds are verified, tested and thoroughly monitored.

We do a proper verification of greyhounds and the results are trustworthy,
no matter what some disappointed owners might say.
Although he/she says that his/her greyhound does not attack, but just “plays” on the track.

In order to be able to reliably determine an attacking greyhound, we use ten electronic eyes
 – ten race referees, a video-jury.
There are no doubts or mistakes regarding the video jury decisions.
Records made by ten video cameras placed around the track are archived from every race.
We can observe in detail any place of the racing circuit from several different angles.
The video system can reliably determine whether unintentional contact during a race or trial takes place or  whether a greyhound attacks his co-racers.
It is possible to replay them anytime, or take pictures, etc. anytime.

Greyhound First Co Co was attacking the whole curve, he was not interested in the bait at all.
At first the greyhound First Co Co was running his race peacefully. However he realized that his sparing-partner is about to overtake him and he started to beat her with the muzzle. While the bitch wanted to run away he was beating her into the flanks. She felt down and it was real miracle that nobody got injured seriously.
The video cameras can monitor any piece of the race track from different points of view - any racing event is recorded from various angles.
